Aihole | Aryapura | Chalukya monuments | Cradle of temple architecture
Aihole is a historical site located in Bagalakote district on the banks on river Malaprabha. Aihole along with Badami & Pattadakkal is rich with Chalukya monuments of stone arts, cave temples and called “Cradle of temple architecture”. Majority of the temples in and around Aihole dates back to the period between the 7th and the 10th century.
History says Aihole was a learning ground for artisans in temple architecture. Durga temple, Ravana Phadi cave temple, Huchimalligudi temple, Maillakarjuna temple & Meguti Jain temple are few notable temples in Aihole. Durga temple is very famous for its unique architecture style, it also has a misleading name as the original deities in the temple are Lord Vishnu & Surya and not Goddess Durga.
Few architecture enthusiasts visit Aihole for this endless treasure of temple architecture. Inscriptions in the vicinity of Aihole shows a long list of rules and cultural influence starting from Chalukyas, Delhi Sultanate, Vijayanagar empire, Adi Shahi rule, Mughal Empire, Maratha Empire, Hyder Ali & Tipu Sultan rule and last under British rule. Cultural diversity was and will be a nomenclature in India. There is no culture or heritage specific to a region or religion, it is beyond boundaries and evolves like the civilisation.
